Structural Engineering Career

Monday, 7. December 2009

Structural engineers deal in the specialized field of design, fabrication, construction and installation of modular or pre-fabricated load-bearing structures made of steel, concrete, masonry or glass such as bridges, elevated highways, underground pipelines, skyscrapers, tunnels, waterways etc which are used as special applications in the Construction and Industrial fields. Structural engineering is usually considered a specialty within civil engineering. Basically, a Structural engineer is a multi-disciplined engineer qualified in Civil, Mechanical & Architectural engineering.

All modern engineering works are based on structural engineering rather than the traditional methods of embedded civil engineering. Hence, there is a great demand for structural engineers.

Some noted examples of structural engineering are: Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building in Dubai, Sydney Opera House, Millennium Dome in London and The Millau Viaduct in France etc.

Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses

There are no separate B.E/B.Tech degree courses in Structural Engineering. Aspirants for a career in Structural engineering should first acquire a degree in Civil/Mechanical engineering from a reputed institution and then do a post-graduate course in Structural Engineering.
