Materials science or materials engineering is an interdisciplinary field which investigates the relationship of the structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales. It includes elements of applied physics and chemistry. Important elements of modern materials science are a product of the space race such as the metallic alloys, and silica and carbon materials, used in the construction of space vehicles enabling the exploration of space. Many materials science departments were named metallurgy departments. The field has since broadened to include every class of materials, including: ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, magnetic materials, medical implant materials and biological materials (materiomics). The study of rare metal alloys is a significant part of materials science. Polymers which are in current widespread use for manufacture of light and super strong space applications are polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, nylons, polyesters, acrylics, polyurethanes, and polycarbonates.

Newer and rarer materials are required for use in future inventions in Aerospace, Aeronautics, Nuclear weapons, nuclear energy and space exploration. This is the domain of Materials Science & Metallurgical engineers who will be in great demand in these enterprises.


Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses

B.E/B.Tech degree courses in Materials Science & Metallurgical Engineering are offered by all Indian Institutes of Tech and most National Institutes of Tech.

Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)

A candidate must fulfill each of the following conditions:

  • Can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.
  • Should have passed (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination in 2008 or should be appearing in 2009, and secure at least 60% (55% for SC/ST & Physically disabled )
  • Minimum age limit of 25 yrs as on 1st October (30 yrs for SC/ST and PD candidates).

Each State has its own particular eligibility criteria and entrance exams which are conducted in the month of May-June. Candidates should ascertain precise details directly from these Institutions.
