Investment Banking is a highly developed field of banking requiring special sets of skills and aptitudes. Investment banks help companies and governments issue securities, help investors purchase securities, manage financial assets, trade securities and provide financial advice. Investment banks want employees with a combination of strong analytical and interpersonal skills. Many college graduates start in investment banking as an analyst. Their next step will be to become an associate. Jobs in investment banking call for very strong mathematical ability.

Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses:

In view of the special responsibilities and job skills needed for a career in Investment Banking, an MBA degree with Business Investment as Major is essentially required. Candidates with a Masters degree in Commerce & Accounting may also get an opening, but sooner than later, they will have to get an MBA degree through distance education or Evening College to reach the top-rungs in Investment Banking.

The basic qualification for MBA Course is graduation in any discipline such as B.Com, BA, B.Sc., BE/B.Tech. Business schools have a three stage selection process for the students seeking admission to MBA degree course comprising of the written examination followed by a round of group discussions and then a personal interview.  The written examination covers aspects like Basic mathematics (Quantitative Analysis), English language (Verbal Analysis), Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation, logic, general knowledge.


Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by Indian Institutes of Management; Management Aptitude Test (MAT) by All India Management Aptitude Testing Service  New Delhi; Xavier Admission Test (XAT) by Xavier Labour Research Institute, Jamshedpur, Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT); ATMA by the Association of Indian Management Schools are the major national level entrance examinations for admission to management courses.

Career Opportunities and Job Prospects:

All major banking and financial institutions offer lucrative careers to MBAs with Business Investment as Major elective plus certification in computer analysis. Foreign banks such as ICICI, ABN AMRO, Lombard, Stanley Morgan keep looking for bright graduates from reputed B-Schools to enlist them as Management Trainees or Investment Analysts as freshers.

Salaries:

Nationalized banks may offer a salary of Rs 8000/- to Rs 10,000/-pm to freshers joining as Assistants at entry level. Later, when they reach Officer Cadre they will be offered Rs 15,000/- to Rs 20,000/- pm

In foreign owned banks and MNCs, management trainees may be offered a salary of     Rs 10,000/- to Rs 15,000/- during probation. Later they will be offered a salary of Rs 15,000/- to Rs 25,000/- pm as Analysts and Associates.
