Tuesday, 24. November 2009

Electrical engineering is a broad field of engineering which deals with the science and technology of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism, and the design, construction, maintenance of products, services, and information systems relating to these technologies. This branch of engineering covers customary areas like generation, distribution and transmission of electricity as well as new-age applications in electronics ranging from telecommunications to computers and micro processors. Electrical engineering course imparts instruction in a wide variety of subjects such as wireless systems, quantum electronics, modern optics, solid state materials and devices, power electronics, control theory; signal processing, data compression and communications etc.

Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses:

In order to pursue a B.E. or B.Tech Course in Electrical Engineering, a candidate must qualify in the higher secondary examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects with a high percentage of marks. IIT-JEE is one of the important entrance examinations for engineering courses. A candidate must fulfill each of the following conditions:

  • Can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.
  • Should have passed (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination in 2008 or should be appearing in 2009, and secure at least 60% (55% for SC/ST & Physically disabled )
  • Minimum age limit of 25 yrs as on 1st October (30 yrs for SC/ST and PD candidates).

Each State has its own particular eligibility criteria and entrance exams. Some famous Engineering Institutions such as Benares Hindu University Institute of Technology Varanasi, Andhra University College of Engineering Visakhapatnam and Anna University Chennai etc have their own entrance exams like EAMCET for A.P, KCET for Karnataka and TCET for Tamil Nadu which are usually conducted in the month of May-June. Candidates should ascertain precise details directly from these Institutions.

Career Opportunities and Job Prospects

Electrical Engineering is a rapidly expanding field. Electrical engineers are required to develop, design, manufacture, test, evaluate, market, sell and manage electrical and electronic systems. Hence, their services are required in all modern technological enterprises.

The average starting salary of electrical engineering graduates is between Rs 20,000 – Rs 30, 000 pm. Fresh graduates from elite technological institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Birla Institute of Technology get more remuneration as compared to others. Needless to say, electrical engineering graduates get top-end salaries abroad in USA, France, Germany and the Gulf countries.
