There has been a huge growth in the hospitality industry in the past few years. Chefs are very much in demand now. Career as a chef is very promising and rewarding.  Professional qualification in hotel management, a passion towards cooking,  creativity and hard work is all that takes to become a successful chef.

To become a chef one needs to do a four year degree or a three year diploma in hotel management. After the completion of these courses, one needs to do apprenticeship in a hotel . Campus selections are held by renowned hotel groups in reputed institutions , which enable the students to find a good job.


To do a degree or a diploma in hotel management, one needs to pass 10+2. National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) conducts entrance exams for students, aspiring a career in this profession. Besides this, many short term certificate courses and diploma courses are offered by private institutes. Specialisation in areas such as Cold kitchen, Hot Kitchen, Bakery and confectionary would further enhance more growth in a chef’s career.

There are ample job opportunities for chefs in hotels, food processing companies, air catering, catering services of railways and defence , bakeries and confectionaries etc. One can even become an entrepreneur and set up hotels and catering units, also supplying food for corporate companies or private functions and parties. By doing a two -year post graduate degree by IHM Institutions, one can join as a faculty member in government or private institutions, offering hotel management courses. A chef can also become a food journalist or a food writer.


Before becoming an Executive chef in a star hotel , one has to hold different positions like Commi 3, Commi 2, Commi 1, Demi – chef de partie,  Chef de partie, Sous (Deputy) chef , Executive sous chef etc. During these stages in his career, a chef can earn anything from  Rs 10,000per month to Rs 60,000per month. An executive chef can earn between Rs 1lakh to 2lakh per month.
