Career in Banking Sector
Banks are the lifelines of the country’s economic, commercial and industrial infrastructure. They are the repositories and custodians of the nation’s wealth. Hence, persons looking for careers in banks need to possess specialized qualifications in Accounts and Finance Management. Banks seek candidates of prudent habits and sobriety with good references of character and antecedents to ensure their integrity and financial propriety.
Employees in banks have to deal with multifarious banking activities such as private banking, commercial banking, financial portfolio management, mutual funds and stocks and shares. They have to maintain current client relationships, ensure banking needs are consistently met, provide exemplary customer service to clients and adhere to company policies and procedures to prevent operating losses to the bank.
Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses:
Banks recruit clerks, office assistants, accountants, portfolio managers, auditors, underwriters etc. A basic degree in Commerce is a must to apply for these positions. Certification in computerized accounting systems (TALLY & EXCEL) and advanced computer courses give an edge to candidates. A Masters degree in Commerce will be needed to attain managerial positions in due course by promotion.
Reputed banks conduct Entrance Exams for recruitment of Clerks, Assistants and Probationary Officers periodically by notification in the media. The educational qualifications for this are given below:-
- General Candidates and others – 60% or more marks in class XII and 55% or more marks in Graduation or Post Graduation.
- SC/ST/PWD Candidates – 55% or more marks in class XII and 50% or more marks in Graduation or Post Graduation.
- Computer Literacy – Proficiency in computer (Certificate from a reputed Institute or having computer as a subject in class XII or Graduation).
- The Age Limit is from 21 years to 30 years which is relaxable by 3-5 years in the case of SC/ST and ex-serviceman categories.

Innumerable career opportunities are open to suitable aspirants with good Degrees in Commerce and certifications in computer accounting in banks and related finance institutions as Clerks, Assistants, Executives, Probationary Officers, Portfolio Managers, Auditors and Financial Analysts. Salaries:
Salary structures are not openly advertised because they depend on the candidate’s qualifications and performance in aptitude tests. As a guide, one can expect a salary of Rs 10,000/- to Rs 15,000/- at the entry level.
