Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. Courses in Architecture impart knowledge of the technical, cultural and environmental factors that determine the limits of any architectural structure in order to balance the aesthetic, scientific and technical requirements.

The government’s slogan of ‘Roti, Kapda and Makaan’ underscores the need for architects to design and construct housing for one and all. Further, the entering of MNCs in the business world of India has started a boom in construction of colossal corporate ‘Houses’ in various Metros. Hence, Architectural engineers are in great demand today.

Eligibility, Entrance Exams and Courses:

There are no separate B.E/B.Tech degree courses in Architectural Engineering. Aspirants for a career in Architectural engineering should first acquire a degree in Civil engineering from a reputed institution and then do a post-graduate course in Architecture.

Indian Institute of Technology – Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)

IIT-JEE is the most important entrance examination for graduation in Civil Engineering.

A candidate must fulfill each of the following conditions:

  • Can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.
  • Should have passed (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination in 2008 or should be appearing in 2009, and secure at least 60% (55% for SC/ST & Physically disabled )
  • Minimum age limit of 25 yrs as on 1st October (30 yrs for SC/ST and PD candidates).

Bachelor in Architecture is a 5 year course after 10+2. Those candidates who have studied Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics can apply for admission. Thereafter, engineering graduates can do Masters in Architecture in any reputed University/Institute.

The specialization of Civil Engineering combined with a Degree/Diploma in Architecture will provide lucrative careers in the many multi-national companies engaged in the construction of mega-corporate houses, airports, fly-overs, mega shopping malls etc.


MNCs and reputed companies offer starting salary of Rs 25,000/- to Rs 30,000/- pm depending on the specialization of the candidates. Later, on gaining experience they can expect salaries of anything up to Rs 60,000/- pm. Salaries of architectural engineers deputed to the Gulf countries go up to about Dirhams/Dinars 10,000/- to 15,000/- pm plus perks.
